Organizational Overview

Interise stimulates economic revitalization in lower income urban communities and provides a diverse group of small business owners with entrepreneurial education, new networks, and access to markets.  This community creates jobs, grows businesses, and develops community leaders.

At Interise, what started as a class of 14 business owners, in Massachusetts, who were committed to achieving their fullest potential has grown exponentially into a national network of teachers, leaders, and entrepreneurs dedicated to social change, community resiliency, and economic development through the growth of small businesses in urban environments.  Since its founding in 2004, Interise has helped small business owners across the country scale by providing them training in best practice management and business strategy.  Interise’s approach is evidence based and committed to ongoing learning and development.  By studying the complex systems that influence small business success in lower income communities and identifying barriers to success, Interise can not only measure the improvement of small businesses who have participated in Interise programs, but can measure how their improvement leads to job creation.  The results are impressive.  Businesses that have participated in the Interise program have created jobs at 4.4 times the average in the private sector according to Bureau of Labor Statistics employment data, tying Interise’s programming directly to the development of over 30,000 jobs.  Since 2012, alumni, on average, have created jobs at 6.1 times the rate of the entire private sector, and at 6.5 times the rate among other small businesses with fewer than 500 employees.  In 2016, Interise businesses achieved 22 percent revenue growth.  In addition, to this, 85% percent of Interise businesses are owned by women, minorities, immigrants, or are in low-income communities.  These businesses have achieved higher average net revenue growth rates than white-owned companies in every year except 2015, and higher average rates of job creation annually since 2013.

Signature programs at Interise include its award-winning StreetWise MBA program, which uses facilitated peer-learning to provide established small business owners with the knowledge, management skills, and relationships they need to achieve scale.  Interise’s strategic partnerships further help to exponentially expand its influence across the country through a mutually beneficial licensing agreement of its curriculum.
