GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The Audiovisual Equipment Technician II provides technical support for all Campus Events-related functions including lighting, sound, AV, computer support, preventative maintenance of AV equipment and performing related work as required.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

In conjunction with the Coordinator of Campus Events, provides daily training, scheduling and supervision of approximately 4 students.

EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The duties and responsibilities listed are not intended to be exhaustive, but serve rather to illustrate the primary activities undertaken by an Audiovisual Technician II in the routine performance of assigned duties in accordance with Class Specifications as identified by the Human Resources Division of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

  • Work directly with faculty, staff, students, and external clients prior to and during events to support event audiovisual logistics.
  • Serve as on-site point of contact for presenters and performers.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and minor repair of audiovisual equipment and decides if equipment should be repaired or replaced.
  • Gives technical advice and instructions on such matters as the use, maintenance and repair of audiovisual equipment and methods for making audiovisual presentations or productions.
  • Operates audiovisual equipment such as audio consoles, projectors and amplifiers to troubleshoot equipment or to give presentations.
  • Contacts vendors to arrange for calibration or repair of equipment or to get information on equipment to recommend purchases or rental.
  • Maintains a schedule for the use and maintenance of equipment.
  • Prepares reports of equipment usage and repair.
  • Designs audiovisual setups for presentations.
  • Provides support for major campus events, such as Commencement, including coordination with event and venue organizers. Creates or edits audio visual materials.
  • Proposes policies and procedures for the operation of the audiovisual unit.
  • Perform major repair or modification of audiovisual and related equipment and develop service procedures as necessary to be followed when new problems arise.
  • Determine inventory levels of all equipment and supplies.
  • Determine which equipment will be purchased or rented, and prepare bid specifications when necessary.
  • Prepare reports on financial needs of the unit for incorporation into the agency budget.
  • Set policies and procedures for unit operations to include determining schedules for the use or maintenance of equipment.
  • Manage and update Campus Events webpage.
  • Install and adjust specialized electronic control equipment such as those used in audio reinforcement.


Job Requirements:

The successful candidate will have:

  • Experience providing technical support for events-related functions including lighting, sound, AV, projection, computer support, live show management, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting of AV equipment and performing related work as required.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge to collaborate with event hosts and performers to determine event needs including the review of technical riders.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to handle conflicting priorities and make decisions quickly and independently.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must have (A) at least two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical experience in the repair and/or maintenance of audiovisual equipment or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

An Associate's or higher degree with a major in electronics or electrical engineering may be substituted for a maximum of 1 year of the required experience.*

A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade or technical school above high school level with a major in electronics or electricity may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.*

*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge with equipment/products such as stage rigging (three electrics 48 pars), theater lighting, ETC element 250 lighting console, Midas M32 mixing console, Allen & Heath Mix Wizard 3, Soundcraft Si Expression 1, Digital amplifiers, press feeds, Crestron and Extron products or equivalent.
  • Experience managing, scheduling and supporting multiple events while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in high-energy, collaborative, multicultural environment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot systems and make repairs or arrange for vendor maintenance as needed.
  • Experience supervising/training a small student staff.
  • Experience with Windows, Apple OS, 25Live/CollegeNet scheduling software, audio/video editing, and Microsoft Office Suite programs including PowerPoint.


Additional Information:

This is a full-time, non-exempt, benefits-eligible position in the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) bargaining unit at the rank of Audiovisual Technician II. Scheduled hours for this position are Monday-Friday 12:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. during the academic year, and Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. in the summer and during break periods. This position requires flexibility to be scheduled weekend, night and overtime hours to service University functions. The bi-weekly pay rate is $1713.61 (grade 16, step 1).
